As a legacy landmark on the Lake Geneva waterfront, The Riviera partnered with MSI General to thoughtfully restore and modernize a beloved 1932 event venue while preserving the historic character that has defined it for generations. The project required a comprehensive, multi-phase renovation to address aging systems while preserving the architectural character that defines its legacy. The project was completed in two phases and supported by a significant community fundraising campaign that made critical building improvements possible.
Phase I focused on stabilizing and protecting the building envelope, including replacement of the clay tile roof, second floor, and clerestory windows, and extensive masonry restoration. Phase II concentrated on interior and site enhancements, with renovations to the ballroom, concession area, boathouse, and boat launch. Interior upgrades included new central air conditioning and an energy-efficient furnace, sprinkler, security, and audiovisual systems, restored chandeliers and sconces, a new maple dance floor, custom bar and reception desk, new wood doors and windows, and replacement of dropped ceilings with traditional plaster. Accessibility improvements, such as an elevator and accessible ramp, ensured the venue could continue to serve a broad range of guests year-round.
Throughout planning and construction, we worked closely with stakeholders to balance historic preservation with modern functionality, carefully selecting materials and detailing that respected the building’s original design. To keep The Riviera operational during its peak event season, all construction was strategically scheduled between February and May, requiring precise coordination and schedule discipline. The success of the restoration was recognized with the 2022 Board of Curators Historic Restoration Award from the Wisconsin Historical Society, underscoring the project’s contribution to preserving a landmark while preparing it for generations to come.
