Retail: Grocery
Outpost Bayview
2023 Completed Project: Bay View, WI
The Bay View Outpost was an “active remodel” which meant it stayed open for business throughout the entire project. By repurposing unused space, 4000 sf was added to the building’s retail footprint. Outpost moved into its Bay View location in 2005 after MSI General renovated the interior and exterior of the preexisting building on Kinnickinnic Ave. Currently, Bay View is its highest volume store among its four Milwaukee-area locations.
Improvements during this phased remodel included:
• Better traffic flow for the entrance, exit, and throughout the store
• Relocation and/or expansion of each department to increase the shelf space for groceries and personal care items
• Additional café seating and an updated outdoor eating area
• More check-out lanes, including self-check-out options
• An enhanced curbside order work area and a modified outdoor curbside pickup area
• The Community Room will open directly into the store
• Essential upgrades in the kitchen; the Bay View kitchen is centrally used for all the food prep for all four Outpost locations
• Installation of a dock leveler in the shipping department for better efficiency and safer logistical operations
Green features included:
• Polished concrete flooring
• Low VOC paints and finishes
• Energy efficient coolers using low energy LED lighting
• Energy efficient upgrades to HVAC
• Eco-friendly refrigerants
• Reusing door frames, ceiling tiles, and doors when possible to minimize waste
• Dumpsters sent directly to a Recycling Center to sort out all recyclable materials

“We consider MSI General a partner in our success and count on them for the decades of experience they bring to the table, especially with grocery retail. Our stores are small compared to others, but because of our high traffic and specialty items, our remodels are complicated, and our current store remodel is no exception.” Lisa Malmarowski, Director of Brand & Store Development at Outpost Natural Foods Co-op
